this is an interesting report. the other night a man was driving a car dangerously in hamilton then crashed, falling in the waikato river, but had evidently escaped the vehicle and one man who witnessed it unfold said he made it out of the car, the river and so he escaped and probably still survived.

the probability of anyone surviving something like that is greater if the car fell in the river close to the bank to begin with and not say in the middle of the river in my mind. surviving the impact of the car hitting the water is one thing, but then escaping the car and the river is another. as for the bridge, well i'm not really sure.

i reckon if the car fell close to the bank and he was on either the far left or far right hand side of the river, then he could have made it out. if in the middle, then he escaped the vehicle but was swept down river and drowned.

 

Perhaps a Taniwha got the driver?

 

I wonder if Toyota will use that as part of their car safety campaign in their commercials. 18 meters, that's quite the fall.

We dont have piranas nor alligators but the giant river wetas will devour a full sized body in minutes.

 

Excuse me, what is a "wetas"? They can devour a full sized human in seconds? How big does this this thing grow?

As for JPT - I can't believe you have never had a kiwi before! And it doesn't taste like chicken...

 

I'm not sure to what extent he's being facetious; a weta is a thundering great bloody big insect, and the larger versions can weigh as much as a sparrow, but they're not eating human beings whole.

 

They are bush wetas that have crossbred with tuataras which as you know are the only remaining still living dinosaurs.
After they ate all the moas out of existince except for a couple hiding in the southern alps they started devouring anyone that drove there cars of bridges and into rivers.
However it is said that they dont like the smell of kiwi fruit and its reported that if you eat a kiwifruit a day the giant river wetas will not eat you.
That part may be an urban legend though.

Wetas sound scary, I watched something on Discovery the other day with a 2-3 foot fish with teeth like a shark that makes short work of a carcass.
